Energy-Efficient Parallel Packet Forwarding

چکیده
As the Internet traffic continues growing rapidly, parallel packet forwarding becomes a necessity in Internet infrastructure to meet the throughput requirement. On the other hand, energy/ power consumption has been a critical challenge for Internet infrastructure. It has been shown that two thirds of power dissipation inside a core router is due to packet forwarding. This chapter studies the problem of energy-efficient parallel packet forwarding in Internet Infrastructure. According to whether the data structure is shared or duplicated among multiple engines, two types of parallel packet forwarding systems are discussed. For the system with shared data structure, we study how to partition the data structure and map onto multiple engines, so that the worst-case energy/ power consumption is minimized. For the system with duplicated data structure, we formulate as an optimization problem how to distribute traffic load onto multiple engines to minimize the overall power consumption while satisfying the throughput demand.

Energy efficient routing protocols can potentially reduce the amount of energy consumed in packet forwarding. However, existing literature lacks studies on improving green performance of geocast routings for the Internet of Vehicles. Therefore, this study proposes an energy efficient min delay (EEMD)-based geocast routing protocol to find optimal relay nodes by incorporating energy consumption ...

In Wireless Sensor Networks, sensor nodes are controlled by either base station or without bases station. In our scheme, the sensor nodes are not depends on the base station. Once the sensor node sent a packet to the destination node, the residual energy is calculated through the multipath routing approach. In this research work, an Efficient Position based Packet Forwarding Protocol (EPPFP) to...
متن کاملEnergy Efficient Internet Infrastructure
Internet is built as a packet-switching network. The kernel function of Internet infrastructure, including routers and switches, is to forward the packets that are received from one subnet to another subnet. The packet forwarding is accomplished by using the header information extracted from a packet to look up the forwarding table maintained in the routers/ switches. Due to rapid growth of net...

متن کاملA High Performance Parallel IP Lookup Technique Using Distributed Memory Organization and ISCB-Tree Data Structure
The IP Lookup Process is a key bottleneck in routing due to the increase in routing table size, increasing traıc and migration to IPv6 addresses. The IP address lookup involves computation of the Longest Prefix Matching (LPM), which existing solutions such as BSD Radix Tries, scale poorly when traıc in the router increases or when employed for IPv6 address lookups. In this paper, we describe a ...
